This World Health Day on 7th April, we stand together for health and for science.
Every year, global communities celebrate the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) on April 7th. This year, World Health Day 2026 focuses on ‘Together for Health: Stand with Science’ to refocus collective energy on a pressing global health challenge.
As we navigate an era of rapid medical breakthroughs and interconnected global threats, the 2026 campaign highlights the ‘one health’ approach—the idea that human health is inseparable from the health of animals, plants, and our shared environment. However, science only saves lives when it is accessible, understood, and actionable at the individual level.
The Power of Scientific Collaboration
Anchoring the 2026 campaign are two major global moments: the international One Health Summit (5–7 April), hosted by the Government of France under the French G7 Presidency; and the inaugural Global Forum of WHO Collaborating Centres (7–9 April), which will gather scientific institutions from over 80 countries.
WHO aims to turn complex evidence into real-world action. From preparing for future pandemics to tackling climate-related health risks, the goal is clear: make science a trusted, visible guide for every patient and community. Governments and institutions are called to strengthen investment in science, support the WHO’s normative role, and embed evidence in health, climate, food, and environmental decision-making.
Despite these grand global efforts, a staggering 4.5 billion people—more than half the world's population—still lack full access to essential health services. Bridging this gap requires more than just high-level policy; it requires personal tools that empower individuals to navigate any healthcare system, anywhere.
Empowering the Individual: The World Medical Card
In alignment with the 2026 theme of using science and standardised data to protect health, the World Medical Card (WMC) has emerged as a vital ally for patients and travellers alike.
While global organisations work on systemic change, the World Medical Card provides a practical solution for organising personal medical data in a single self-generated account. It ensures that your personal health information—your history, allergies, and medications—is never lost in translation.
- Universal Language: Using WHO global standards (ICD-11 for diagnoses and ATC for medications), the WMC ensures doctors worldwide understand your condition, even if they don't speak your language.
- Emergency Readiness: In a crisis, the physical card and secure app provide first responders with instant access to your vital stats, reducing the risk of medical errors.
- 100+ Languages: The app can translate your medical profile into over 100 languages, making it an essential companion for an increasingly mobile global population.
As we join the wider conversation, together for health and standing with science, we also want to ensure that no matter where our members are in the world, their vital medical info is with them to expedite treatment in emergency situations.
